| A rectangular area, centered on the runway centerline, which includes the runway (and stopway, if present) and the runway shoulders. The portion of the abutting, the edge of the runway shoulders, runway ends and stopways are cleared, drained, graded and usually turfed. Under normal conditions the runway safety area is capable of supporting snow removal, fire fighting, rescue equipment and accomadating the occasional passage of aircraft without causing major damge to the aircraft. The defined area is a surface surrounding the runway prepared or suitable for reducing the risk of damage to airplanes in the event of an undershoot, overshoot or excursion from the runway. This area would be at about the same elevation as the runway itself. |
| The RPZ is trapezoidal in shape and centered about the extended runway centerline. The RPZ dimension for a particular runway end is a function of the type of aircraft and approach visibility minimum standard associated with that runway end. The RPZ function is to enhance the protection of people and property on the ground. Where practical, airport owners should own the property under the runway approach and departure areas to at least the limits of the RPZ. It is desirable to clear the entire RPZ of all aboveground objects. Where this is impractical, airport owners, as a minimum, shall maintain the RPZ clear of all facilities supporting incompatible activities. Incompatible activities include, but are not limited to, those which lead to an assembly of people. Land uses prohibited from the RPZ are: residences and places of public assembly (churches, schools, hospitals, office buildings, shopping centers, and other uses with similar concentrations of persons typify places of public assembly). FAA recommendation: Where it is determined to be impractical for the airport owner to acquire and plan the land uses within the entire RPZ, the RPZ land use standards have recommendation status for that portion of the RPZ not controlled by the airport owner. |
